Keep trash securely out of reach of bears.
In winter, the “bear box” may be snowed in. Trash removal will bypass us if access to the bear box and its door is not free of snow.
Trash management:
A serious issue in Truckee and Tahoe-Donner. Trash management has become a point of contention for opponents of short term rentals. In response, the Town of Truckee and the Tahoe-Donner HOA have established — and rigorously enforce — a huge fine schedule for trash spills. We have to pass the fines on to the party responsible for the spill.
Garbage can:
Located in the bear-proof metal garbage bin (the "bear box") at the driveway, close to the street.* Pick-up is on Tuesdays.**
Be sure the bear box door is closed and securely locked (you may need to help with your knee to get the door in position for complete locking … ).
Recycling:
MUST USE BLUE BAGS. In the kitchen, under the counter, find two bins with BLUE plastic liners that are used for recycled items. All recyclables can be mixed without preference: cleaned glass and cans, plastics #1 & 2, clean paper. When full, these blue bags must also be placed inside the bear box -- but NOT INSIDE THE GARBAGE CAN — place them NEXT TO the garbage can.

ONLY plastics #1 & 2 are recyclable. Pizza boxes are trash.
The local garbage contractor is extremely picky. To avoid expensive extra charges and hassle, please:
— Only recyclables in blue bags (NO TRASH, NO PIZZA BOXES)
— Blue bags must be CLOSED/TIED at top (never over-fill)
— Blue bags must be placed NEXT TO the can, NOT INSIDE it.
— Trash can must not be filled beyond the rim (NO "SPILL-OVERS")
Take home with you what does not fit in the can without "spill-over"
NEVER place a bag outside the bear box
(This would trigger huge fines by the Tahoe-Donner Association)

* If the bear box is covered under snow, please use a shovel (we provide) to access it. There is only ONE CAN in the bear box. Take home with you what does not fit in it. NEVER LEAVE GARBAGE OR RECYCLABLES IN THE HOUSE OR GARAGE OR ANYWHERE OUTSIDE when you depart. Don’t even leave clean empty boxes — they are an invitation for others to deposit trash in them. Be prepared to take home your gift wrappings.
** Depending when previous renters departed, it can happen that the bear box is not empty when you arrive. Also, be aware that the garbage company will only empty the bear box if it is fully accessible and free of snow.
