The NEMA 10-30 and 14-30 adapters can be purchased from Tesla for about $50 each. One can also purchase from Tesla a NEMA 6-20 adapter, which is intended for smaller 240V outlets that limit current to 16 Amps. We have no such outlets at Bella Vista.

E-Vehicle Charging

It takes us approximatewly 80 “Tesla-miles” from the supercharger in Petaluma, E. Washington Str. & 101, to Bella Vista.

IF YOU COME WITH AN EV OTHER THAN A TESLA, YOU MAY CHARGE YOUR VEHICLE ONLY FROM A STANDARD THREE-PRONG 120V-15A OUTLET in the garage. Bring your approved (factory supplied) charging cable.
PARK YOUR VEHICLE OUTSIDE WHILE CHARGING (but make sure to prevent entry of rodents to the interior of the house or garage … 😉). Lead your charging cable through the opening provided in the wall next to the garage door (photo below). The nearest power outlet is about 16 feet behind that point.
SET YOUR CHARGING CURRENT TO 12 Amperes MAXIMUM (1.4kW). This will permit charging at a rate of about 4 - 5 miles per hour. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CHARGE AT HIGHER CURRENT.

Exception: If, AND ONLY IF, you bring your own commercially purchased charging cable ending with a NEMA 10-30 plug (3 prongs, left in photo), you may follow the instruction for charging at 240V-20A, as described for Tesla vehicles below.

==============================

IF YOU COME WITH A TESLA VEHICLE, FOLLOW THE ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS if slow charging is all you need, OR KEEP ON READING FOR FASTER CHARGING.

SUMMARY (for faster charging, Tesla vehicles only):
— BRING YOUR OWN ORIGINAL TESLA CABLE WITH A TESLA-ORIGINAL NEMA three-prong 10-30 ADAPTER (left in Photo).
— VEHICLE MUST BE parked OUTSIDE, GARAGE DOOR CLOSED (rodent-proof) WHILE CHARGING (cable though opening in wall as shown in photo).
— SET 20A MAX. CURRENT DRAW (4.8 kW, provides approx. 19 miles/hr).

DETAILS (for faster charging, Tesla vehicles only):
Our guests may “destination”-charge their Tesla vehicle at Bella Vista from our 240V electric dryer outlet, provided they bring their own cable and limit the charging current to 20A (i.e., approx. 4800 Watts at 240 Volts) to avoid circuit over-loading. It is very important that you familiarize yourself with this technicality before you attempt to connect to the 240V dryer outlet at Bella Vista.

The cable you need to bring is the original home-charging cable that came with your vehicle, fitted with a 3-prong “NEMA 10-30” adapter. Tesla owners can buy that adapter from Tesla for about $40. Simply pull off the end that features the regular 120-V plug — yes, it does come off !!! — and attach the adapter to the cable; then plug your Tesla adapter into the clearly marked outlet behind the dryer. DO NOT USE ANY REGULAR 12-GA OR 14-GA EXTENSION CORD “CUSTOM FITTED” WITH A NEMA 10-30 PLUG, as those cables are not designed for high current and can overheat and create a fire hazard. YOU WILL BE LIABLE FOR DAMAGES WHEN YOU DRAW MORE THAN 20 AMPERES OR USE AN UNSAFE CABLE. (Note that 20A is less than what your vehicle might indicate you can safely draw from this outlet).

While charging, the vehicle must be parked outside the garage, with closed garage door. The distance from the garage door to the NEMA 10-30 outlet is about 12 feet. Please mind that there are many curious rodents outside that would just love to “settle down” inside the garage. Note the special hole in the wall to the right of the garage door to safely pass through the cable (photo).

=============================================

Note that our clearly marked NEMA 10-30 outlet behind the dryer is spun off from the dryer outlet circuit. Therefore, DO NOT RUN THE DRYER WHILE YOUR TESLA VEHICLE IS BEING CHARGED (this would overload the circuit and trip the circuit breaker).

Please let us know, without us reminding you, before your departure how many kWh you have charged. We will then subtract the cost from your refundable Security Deposit (at $0.40/kWh or 10 cents per mile). (If ino security deposit, please remit via personal check or Zelle).

Call Klaus if you have any questions regarding charging your EV at Bella Vista.
